The Thrissur Thaikat Mooss family holds a pivotal place in the history and practice of Ayurveda, the Indian traditional medicine. With a lineage that could be traced back to centuries, they are a treasure trove of knowledge and experienced in healing practices that has been passed down from generation to generation. Over the years, it has been refined and fine-tuned to suit the needs of the time.
Though Thaikat Mooss’ ancestry could be tracked down to Malabar, they had to abandon their land as Samuthiri (Zamorin), the erstwhile ruler of Malabar deported Pazhanellippurathu Mooss, his court physician for having treated the King of a neighbouring princely State -SakthanThampuran.
Pazhanellippurathu Mooss belonging to the Ashtavaidya family was deported overnight and while fleeing, the only belonging Mooss’ wife could take with her was the sacred idol of Vettekkaran, their family deity.
When SakthanThampuran came to know about their turn of fate, he rehabilitated Pazhanellippurathu Mooss family at Kizhakkumppattukara, Thrissur. Henceforth, the family came to be famously known as Thrissur Thaikat Mooss.
The sacred idol of Vettekkaran was since then installed in their family home and is worshipped by the family even today.
A giant dive in the field of Ayurveda for the family happened during the period of the fifth-generation scion of the exiled Mooss -Thrissur Thaikat Vasudevan Mooss, fondly known as Unni Mooss. He was born in 1900 AD and in the memory of his father, Thrissur Thaikat Narayanan Mooss, a renowned poet and a physician; Unni Mooss founded an institution in 1920 and named it SNA Oushadhasala.
